Wire Rope

From Standard Solutions to Customized Specialties: Standard Wire Ropes (DIN EN 12385) and Specialty Wire Ropes

Dolezych provides steel wire ropes sold by the meter according to DIN EN 12385 standards. Our specialty ropes complement our standard range, tailored specifically to meet unique requirements, such as multilayer winding for crane operations or specialized forestry applications.

Standard Solutions: Wire Ropes According to DIN EN 12385

The DoDra round strand ropes from Dolezych, available with either fiber or steel cores, come in standard constructions (6×7, 6×19, or 6×37). Typically galvanized, these ropes offer high flexibility, elasticity, and low twist/stress characteristics. This means the strands will minimally or not at all protrude when unbound.

Additionally, Dolezych provides standard ropes in Warrington-Seale constructions (6×36, 8×19, or 8×36), commonly used as running ropes, available in both plain and galvanized finishes.

Seale Construction:
Seale strands have two layers of wires helically wound around a central wire, with significantly thicker outer wires compared to the inner wires, distinguishing them from other parallel-stranded constructions.

Filler Construction:
In filler constructions, thinner wires are placed in the spaces („valleys“) between wires in the first layer. The second layer then contains twice as many wires as the first.

Warrington Construction:
This construction type features a specific number of wires in the first layer around a core wire, with an identical number of thicker wires fitting into the spaces of the first layer. Additional thinner wires sit on top of the first layer, combining with the thicker outer wires to achieve a consistent outer diameter.

Specialty Solutions : Wire Ropes Tailored for Your Application

When standard ropes do not meet your operational needs, our specialty wire ropes offer optimized solutions. Dolezych supplies rotation-resistant and low-twist special wire ropes, extending the rope’s life span and reducing installation times over the life of your equipment.

For an overview of rotation-resistant and low-twist special rope designs, please consult our best-selling product catalog.

Rotation-Resistant Specialty Ropes:
Our rotation-resistant ropes (DoCasar, DoDiepa, or DoRope product lines) are flexible hoist ropes featuring a steel core. Even under high tensile forces, these ropes remain rotation-free. They feature intensive lubrication and high breaking strength. The uniquely constructed steel core prevents internal wire crossing and reduces internal rope damage. For instance, DoCasar Starlift ropes are widely used globally for single-layer winding, while DoCasar Eurolift ropes are trusted for multilayer winding operations.

Low-Twist Specialty Ropes with Plastic-Coated Steel Core:
Specialty ropes from our DoCasar, DoRope, and DoDiepa product lines feature a plastic intermediate layer becoming increasingly popular due to benefits such as:

  • Excellent running smoothness
  • Eliminates contact between core and outer strands
  • Reduces strand protrusion („birdcaging“)
  • Plastic layer acts as a lubricant substitute
  • Provides corrosion protection for the steel core
  • Greater stability during rope installation

These specialty ropes with plastic inserts are available in compacted (compressed) or non-compacted versions. Non-compacted ropes follow conventional manufacturing methods, while compacted ropes undergo plastic compression at the strand and/or rope level, creating a smoother surface with the following advantages:

  • Increased breaking load due to higher metallic cross-section (fill factor)
  • Extended service life due to reduced wear on rope sheaves and the rope itself
  • Reduced diameter loss under load
  • Larger contact surface on rope sheaves due to the smoother rope surface
  • Ideal for applications requiring ropes with extreme demands, such as container cranes, gantry cranes, and overhead bridge cranes

Compacted Forestry Ropes

Our DoForst compacted ropes offer optimized rope designs specifically tailored for forestry applications. Special rope compaction techniques yield larger metallic cross-sections and increased breaking forces. Compaction at the end of production results in a smoother rope surface, extending your ropes‘ life expectancy.

Note: Compacted forestry ropes typically feature a six-strand standard rope construction without a plastic intermediate layer (unlike eight-strand specialty ropes).

Stainless Steel Wire Ropes

Our DoVier stainless steel ropes are suitable where rust prevention is critical (e.g., marine or food industries). In addition to exceptional corrosion resistance, these ropes are robust and highly formable, perfect for design-oriented steel rope applications. We also offer additional stainless steel solutions in the category of fine ropes and architectural ropes.

Plastic-Coated Steel Wire Ropes : Galvanized and Stainless Steel

If galvanized ropes require enhanced corrosion protection or if a metallic rope surface affects your equipment performance, consider our plastic-coated wire ropes. Plastic coatings minimize abrasion, reduce noise, and improve running smoothness. Please note: Very few coated ropes are suited for limited-duration use as running ropes.
